The back story

About Eating in Los Angeles: the back story

Los Angeles’ food is shaped by Mexico, Asia, the farms of California and the film industry’s love of a good dining room. In 2026 the MICHELIN Guide awarded stars to more than two dozen restaurants in and around the city.

The stars

In the 2026 MICHELIN Guide, Providence on Melrose Avenue and Somni in West Hollywood hold three stars; Kato, Hayato, Vespertine and Mélisse hold two; and some twenty more hold one, from Osteria Mozza to n/naka and Holbox.

Hollywood’s dining rooms

Musso & Frank Grill has served Hollywood since 1919. The Polo Lounge at The Beverly Hills Hotel, Spago in Beverly Hills and Craig’s in West Hollywood carry on the tradition of the industry dining room.

Two Los Angeles restaurants hold three MICHELIN stars in 2026: Providence and Somni.

Food halls and markets

Grand Central Market on Broadway and the Original Farmers Market at 3rd and Fairfax are the places to graze, and Philippe the Original near Union Station is famous for its French dip sandwiches.

Booking

Book the starred restaurants well ahead, often weeks. Tipping in restaurants is customary in the US, and many restaurants add service or kitchen fees: check the menu and the bill.

Our advice: mix one starred tasting menu with a long lunch at a market and an evening at a Hollywood institution.
