The back story

About Día de los Muertos in Los Angeles

Día de los Muertos, the Mexican Day of the Dead, is celebrated across Los Angeles at the end of October and the start of November. Families build altars (ofrendas) with marigolds, photographs and the favourite foods of those they remember.

Hollywood Forever

The cemetery’s Día de los Muertos festival fills the grounds with altars, music, dance and art. In 2026 it is on Saturday 24 October, from noon to midnight, and it is ticketed (ladayofthedead.com).

Olvera Street

At El Pueblo de Los Ángeles, the city’s founding plaza, Olvera Street hosts Día de los Muertos events and altars each year; check elpueblo.lacity.gov for the programme.

In 2026, the 27th Día de los Muertos at Hollywood Forever is on Saturday 24 October, from noon to midnight.

Etiquette

Altars are personal memorials. Look, but don’t touch or take items, and ask before photographing people.

Our advice: buy Hollywood Forever tickets early, and go by rideshare: parking nearby is very limited.
